The Recorder: Pirie’s Gold Ticket

Press | 15 Feb 2024

The Upper Spencer Gulf will be in the spotlight later this month with Premier Peter Malinauskas visiting for a major economic summit in each of the former ‘iron triangle’ towns and the signing this week of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Magnetite Mines and the Port Pirie Regional Council.

With the imminent release of the State Government’s Green Iron and Steel Strategy, the MoU establishes a framework for the Port Pirie Regional Council and Magnetite Mines to collaborate and position Port Pirie for future ‘value adding’ opportunities while ensuring community involvement throughout the planning process.

Mayor Leon Stephens said he was excited about the possibilities for Port Pirie: “For us opening this door, signing the Memorandum of Understanding gives me an opportunity to talk to the Premier and Minster Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP.

“We’re a good business partner, we want this to happen, so we will actually work as hard and fast as we can to ensure that it does. It gives an opportunity for our young people to have career paths and be financially stable.”
